Sorting PDF Print E-mail

The main purpose of sorting is to separate materials with value from materials without value. The next step in the process is to separate different fractions of value into cleaner fractions to get a better price for the products.

Finally, we can also separate non-burnable materials from burnable materials if the waste is used for energy.

Sorting can be carried out in various ways, but the most common are:
  • Sorting by means of vibrator screens
  • Sorting by means of Disc Screens
  • Sorting by means of magnets
  • Sorting by means of eddy current
  • Sorting by means of scanners e.g. laser or colour

Vibrator Screens:
The big advantages are that vibrator screens can handle high capacities and that they are very suitable for simple size grading by means of screens and gravity.

Disc Screens:
Can be used to sorting mixed waste e.g. take out OCC, paper, PET bottles, cans etc. It can also be used to clean paper from OCC to get a cleaner grade thereby getting a better price for the paper and OCC.

Magnets:
The magnet is designed for removing steel parts from other materials. It is usually placed above a conveyor or vibrator. It can be a permanent magnet or an electro-magnet where the magnetic field is adjustable.

Eddy Current:
The method is used to separate conductive materials from other materials e.g. plastic. The eddy current effect appears if non-ferrous conductors of electricity are exposed to a magnetic alternating field. Only conductive materials can be inspected.

Scanners:
There are two types of scanners: colour scanners and laser scanners.
Colour scanners can e.g. be used to separate different colourful plastic materials.

Laser scanners can e.g. be used to determine different kinds of materials, which cannot be separated by means of one of the above-mentioned technologies. An example is stainless steel mixed with other kinds of non-magnetic steel.
